Fox 13: UTHSC announces layoffs, hiring freeze
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center laid off dozens of employees Friday, a spokesperson confirmed. Many of the employees worked in custodial services. The spokesperson said 70 employees would be displaced as a result of a reduction in force. According to the letter sent to faculty and staff, the layoffs come as “there is substantially decreased on-campus density of students, staff, faculty, and visitors, and, consequently, campus work patterns and workloads have changed” due to the coronavirus pandemic. The university said it has created 17 new positions that those employees may apply for immediately, according to the spokesperson, and Human Resources is working on job fairs, resume-building workshops, and other resources to help those affected find new positions.
