“For high-risk people, antiviral medications really need to be started relatively quickly, within a few days, to have the best effect,” said Shirin Mazumder, a professor of infectious diseases at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine. “That can be effective in keeping people out of the hospital and prevent the infection from progressing and getting worse.”
