UTHSC Announces Six Grant Awards Totaling $402,000

The UT Institute for Research, Innovation, Synergy and Health Equity at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) has announced the latest round of grant recipients from its Pilot Translational and Clinical Studies (PTCS) Program. Six UTHSC researchers were chosen from a field of 28 submissions.


Lebron Cooper Appointed Chair of Anesthesiology at UTHSC

Lebron Cooper, MD, has been named chair for the Department of Anesthesiology at UTHSC. An alumnus of the UTHSC College of Medicine, he will begin his new role on Sept. 28.


Institutions Join Fight Against Childhood Obesity

Blacks’ Higher Death Rates May Be Linked to Healthcare Barriers

The study, led by Csaba P. Kovesdy, MD, of the Memphis VA Medical Center and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, included 2,525,525 white and 547,441 black patients with normal kidney function receiving care in the VA healthcare system.

Vaxent and PREVENT kick off Strep A vaccine trials

The vaccine was developed by Dr. James Dale at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and is being commercialized by PREVENT and Vaxent. The Phase I trial was announced in August.
