“It is a very serious disease and it can be fatal,” Dr. Michael Whitt of the UT Health Science Center said.
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the 100-year-old medical education and research complex in the Medical District, is halfway through a five-year plan that includes $250 million in demolition, new construction and renovation to its campus. As UTHSC expands its footprint, its infrasturucture upgrades help keep Memphis on the medical map.
Bernd Meibohm, associate dean for research and graduate programs at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and a professor in the department of pharmaceutical sciences, has received a $315,651 grant from the office of the director of the National Institutes of Health. The online auction by UTHSC of more than 300 works by internationally known Memphis artist Paul Penczner grossed more than $70,000. Works auctioned were part of a collection of 400 pieces donated by the late artist’s widow Jolanda Penczner. All proceeds go to cardiovascular research at UTHSC.
