Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital has named Bret A. Mettler, MD, its new Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Executive Co-Director of the Heart Institute at Le Bonheur and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Mettler will also hold The Susan and Alan Graf Endowed Chair in Pediatric Heart Surgery at Le Bonheur.


National Institutes of Health grant could mean progress toward improved outcomes for stroke patients

The Associate Dean of Research at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s College of Nursing has received a two-year, $421,188 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to improve cognitive screening in people who suffer from a devastating type of stroke called aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH).

This study included 64 women aged 24 to 66 years, all of whom had type 2 diabetes; the group’s average hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) at diagnosis was 6.4% (range 5.8% to 13.2%), said Laura Reed, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, CDC, of the College of Nursing, The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis.
