Although sickle retinopathy is considered an age-related process, researchers at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center presented surprising research findings at the AAO meeting. Their study found that one in three children had retinopathy, of which 9% required treatment, suggesting that children need to be screened for vision problems at the same rate as adults with sickle cell disease.
