Cowan — whose research interests include lifestyle interventions for overweight youths and adults — will arrive at UAMS from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Memphis. There, she worked as a professor and an associate dean for academic and student affairs in the College of Nursing, the news release states.
After graduating from Loma Linda University in California, this former New Yorker landed in Memphis, at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, where she pursued a fellowship in her area of interest. That interest was pediatric and adolescent gynecology, and at the time, only three schools offered programs in that field.
With new construction west of Manassas Street and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center remaking itself, the medical center is again in transition.

The long road home took Teresa Wright, MD, to the Northeast, then the Midwest and then the Southwest, but 31 years after she left Memphis, she made it back. Wright left Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston this spring and joined the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) as associate professor of dermatology and pediatrics.
Shorb said that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis remains Methodist’s academic partner and the Mayo collaboration is going to enhance UTHSC researchers, faculty and residents as well as other Methodist physicians.
