“This is worse in the African American community,” said Dr. Chinelo Animalu, an infectious disease attending physician at Methodist University hospital and associate professor of at UTHSC College of Medicine. “I’m a Black woman from Africa, and this hits me real hard to see young people contracting this disease that’s easy to avoid.”
The recently expanded Heart Institute at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center has named Dr. Bret A. Mettler as executive co-director and chief of pediatric cardiac surgery.
Southern Reins is also providing hands-on educational opportunities. It serves as a continuing-education fieldwork site for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and an internship location for Rhodes College and Concorde Career College’s Occupational Therapy Assistant Program.

For Zak Ozmo, music is not just his profession and his love, it’s also something that helped him heal. A refugee from Bosnia and Herzegovina during the civil war in Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, Zak turned to music to help heal from the trauma of that experience.
Following a national search, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center has named Dr. Jessica Snowden as its new vice chancellor for research, effective Sept. 1.
