 After 42 years of service, Sgt. Charles L Gutelius will be retiring from UTHSC Police Department.  A retirement celebration will be held on Friday, June 23, 2023, at 12 noon in the Nash Atrium.  We welcome you all to come and say your farewells to a well-deserved public servant.

Sergeant Charles L. Gutelius had a passion for protecting people and property at an early age and started his career in the security field at the age of 16. He had the heart to serve and protect, so he pursued a career in law enforcement.  On March 30, 1979, he successfully completed the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department Academy, where he served as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff from 1979-1984. Sergeant Gutelius also served as a Reserve Patrolman of the Millington Police Department, from March 2006- December 2015. His employment with UTHSC Police Department began in February of 1981.

Sergeant Gutelius has been a commissioned police officer for 42 years with the UTHSC Campus Police Department. During his time employed at UTHSC, he served in various ranks and positions such as a Field Training Officer; Patrol Corporal (Assist. Supervisor), Detective, and from 2015- 2017 interim Lieutenant 2nd in command of UTHSC Campus Police. In June 2020, Gutelius became a Police Sergeant in the Patrol Division. He is currently assigned to Charlie Shift, as the first-line supervisor for Police and Security Officers.

Throughout his law enforcement career, he has received training in various specialties such as Crime Scene Investigation, Interview and Interrogation, Basic Criminal Investigation, Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Interdiction, Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC), Training, Computer Crimes, Enhanced Threat and Risk Assessment, Officer Survival, CIT training, and Homeland Security Network. He has also obtained the following training: Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy (TLETA) for Firearms Instructor School; Mid-South Training Institute for Basic Crime Scene Investigation, Crime Scene Investigation Techniques, Interview & Interrogation Training; Law Enforcement Instructor Development training; Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Interdiction training at the Dyersburg Police; Background Investigations; UTHSC PD Firearms training class for the Less Lethal Super Sock; UT Law Enforcement Innovation Center Cultural Competency for Law Enforcement course.

Sergeant Charles Gutelius has been a man of service for many years. He has continuously given UTHSC Police and Campus his best with his knowledge, expertise, and dedication.  Thank you for your service and we wish you well in your next endeavor, you will be MISSED.
