Research Lab Equipment Alarm Protocol

|

story about the loss of research specimens and subsequent lawsuit has circulated recently. University personnel should be aware of how to respond when you hear alarming equipment.

  • Do not touch equipment or materials unless specifically authorized to do so.
  • Contact the responsible party to inform them of the alarm. The names of individuals associated with each lab can be found on the lab hazard placard posted at the entrance to the lab. UTHSC Facilities Administration can be contacted by calling 901-448-5661 to report alarms on university owned, non-research property or equipment.
  • Equipment may require servicing by a technician to address the condition causing the alarm. There may be a delay before a technician is available. Be prepared to leave the equipment in the state of alarm.
  • Only the owner and authorized staff are liable for maintaining the condition of equipment, materials and specimens. You may assume liability by doing more than notifying the responsible party.
  • Freezers containing research specimens must be registered with the Office of Research Safety Affairs for the contents to be insured. To register freezers or for other information about this program refer to the Critical Freezer Guidelines.
