Overview
James H. Horner was a medical student who died shortly before his expected graduation from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. His medical degree was awarded posthumously in June 1988. Dr. Horner’s family established this distinguished professorship in his name “to promote education, compassion, and academic excellence in the practice of medicine”. Join us as we welcome expert speakers who will discuss hypertension guidelines and treatment.
Educational Objectives:
- Describe the various guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension
- Identify the importance of lifestyle factors in managing and controlling hypertension
- Define the first, second, and subsequent line treatment options for patients with hypertension
Professional Practice Gap:
Hypertension is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality and a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease as well as stroke, end-stage renal failure, and peripheral vascular disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) nearly half of the adults in the United States have hypertension (48.1%, 119.9 million), defined as a systolic blood pressure greater than 130 mmHg or a diagnostic blood pressure greater than 80 mmHg or are taking medication for hypertension. Also, hypertension is associated with shorter life expectancy. Over the last decade, there have been numerous updates in the treatment of patients with hypertension. Our target audience’s current professional practice is less than ideal or could be better in terms of its knowledge and competence in the methodologies to reduce elevated blood pressure that results in improved patient outcomes. Clinical inertia can also be an issue if healthcare providers fail to initiate or intensify antihypertensive therapy when indicated. However, disparities in the treatment of hypertension still exist. This lecture is designed to give healthcare professionals the latest evidence-based medicine that could be utilized in clinical practice for the prevention and management of hypertension in patients.
Desired Outcome:
This lecture is designed to provide interactive educational activities that discuss complicated case scenarios that have been shown to improve participant application of evidence-based medicine for patients with hypertension. Providing a format for adult learning that includes lectures, case-based studies, interactive question and answer sessions, collaborative sharing of patient care issues, and networking with other healthcare professionals has shown to improve participant knowledge and competency.
