On Friday, November 11, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center will celebrate and honor the veterans of the United States Armed Forces on campus by hosting “Honoring All Who Serve,” a Veterans Day observance. The breakfast reception will be held in the Student-Alumni Center’s O.D. Larry Dining Hall from 8:30 to 10 a.m.
The annual event is free, and all UTHSC students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. The Office of Equity and Diversity began hosting the event as a way for the campus community to observe Veterans Day. As part of the event, veterans will receive a tribute and a word of thanks from a guest faculty, staff, and student speaker. A gift will also be presented to veterans in attendance.
UTHSC currently has 38 student veterans enrolled on campus, and according to 2015 data, approximately 95 faculty and staff voluntarily identify as having veteran status.
In 2015, UTHSC was successfully recognized as an approved VETS Campus. The VETS Campus recognition stems from the 2014 Tennessee Veterans Education Transition Support (VETS) Act to recognize higher education institutions that allow veterans a seamless transition from service in the military to enrollment in a university.
One of 17 higher educational institutions to receive the recognition, UTHSC is committed to providing veterans a supportive environment, where they can pursue their degrees. As part of a VETS Campus, in 2015-2016, UTHSC graduated approximately 11 veterans or dependents of veterans.
