The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) has been named one of the 2014 Top Workplaces in Memphis by The Commercial Appeal.
The distinction, given to a total of 50 large, medium and small workplaces, is based solely on surveys completed by employees. The newspaper partnered with WorkplaceDynamics, an employee survey firm in Philadelphia, to identify the best places to work based on factors including training, direction, retention, motivation, benefits and pay. The survey also measured how employees feel about their jobs.
More than 800 companies were invited to participate, and almost 19,000 employees responded on paper or online to the 22 survey questions. The results indicate that feeling appreciated and doing meaningful work is the most important contributor to job satisfaction, according to WorkplaceDynamics.
Illustrating the importance of positive connection between manager and employee, one UTHSC respondent wrote: “I have a good manager. She helps not only me but my other co-workers to explore and learn new things. And you wouldn’t know my manager was a manager, because she does everything we do.”
Chancellor Steve Schwab, MD, applauded UTHSC team members for the honor. “Your efforts every day make UTHSC a great place to work. They also make Memphis, the state of Tennessee and the Mid-South a healthier and better place to live,” he said. “We are proud of what we have accomplished together and pledge to continue to make UTHSC an outstanding place to work.”
UTHSC was also recently named a “Healthier Tennessee Workplace” by Governor Bill Haslam’s Foundation for Health and Wellness. The award recognizes organizations that encourage employees to live healthier lives at work and at home.
