The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) has begun the transition to its new domain name – uthsc.edu. A domain name is essentially the electronic address that identifies an organization throughout the Internet. The most commonly known uses for a domain name are for Web page and e-mail addresses.
“The change to uthsc.edu synchronizes our electronic identity with the official name of our institution,” said Ken Brown, JD, MPA, PhD, executive vice chancellor and chief of staff at UTHSC. Rights to use the uthsc.edu identity were previously held by another educational institution, which had not used the electronic address for about two years. Educause, the nonprofit association that governs assignment of domain names related to higher education, released the uthsc.edu domain name to UT Health Science Center in the fall of 2009.
Through February 28, two domain names for UTHSC will connect to the Health Science Center: utmem.edu (the old address) and uthsc.edu. Effective March 1, utmem.edu will no longer be operational and none of the e-mail or Web addresses that use utmem.edu will connect. All addresses including utmem.edu must be changed to uthsc.edu before March 1. For additional information about the domain name change, visit www.uthsc.edu/domainchange/.
