Under the direction of Committee Chair Robert Waller, MD (president emeritus of the Mayo Foundation and UTHSC alumnus), the search committee for a chancellor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center has selected seven candidates, who will interview on campus in January.
The seven semi-finalists include: Deborah German, MD, former president and CEO of Saint Thomas Hospital, Nashville, Tenn.; Dick R. Gourley PharmD, dean of the UT College of Pharmacy, Memphis, Tenn.; William J. Martin, MD, University of Cincinnati professor of medicine, Cincinnati, Ohio; Antonia Novello, MD, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Health, New York, N.Y.; William F. Owen, Jr., MD, chief scientist of Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Renal division, Deerfield, Ill.; Charles L. Rice, MD, Petersdorf Scholar-in-Residence and vice chancellor for health affairs at the University of Illinois, Chicago, Ill.; and David M. Stern, MD, dean of the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, Augusta, Ga.
The initial group of 21 applicants included vice chancellors, deans, professors, department heads, and other senior executives in both the academic community and private sector from across the country.
Dr. Waller commented, “All of the applicants were truly impressive and highly qualified. It was a challenge to decide who should be included in this group of semi-finalists.”
When the semi-finalists visit campus, they will meet with members of the search committee, students, residents, staff, faculty, and leaders within all seven colleges, as well as with community leaders and partners.
“Our committee remains focused on sending to President Petersen, as early in the first quarter of 2005 as possible, the names of three or four qualified candidates, unranked, for his final decision,” Dr. Waller said.
