Decades-long investigations throughout the world have documented that ethanol-induced modification of ion currents mediated by BK channels modify physiology and behavior. A recent paper published by Drs. Bukiya and Dopico in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences unveils and characterizes an ethanol-recognition site in the BK channel-forming protein itself, a finding that will lead to design of small agents to counteract alcohol actions in the body that are mediated by modification of BK channels.
