Steve J. Schwab, MD, executive dean of the College of Medicine, has appointed Polly Hofmann, PhD, as associate dean for faculty affairs and J. Timothy Mashburn, MBA, as associate dean for finance and administration for the COM.

Steve J. Schwab, MD, executive dean of the College of Medicine (COM) for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), has appointed Polly Hofmann, PhD, as associate dean for faculty affairs and J. Timothy Mashburn, MBA, as associate dean for finance and administration in the COM, Memphis campus.

Dr. Hofmann’s primary faculty appointment is in the Department of Physiology where she is a professor. She also currently serves as the chair for the COM’s Appointment, Promotion and Tenure committee (CAPT). Her work as the associate dean of faculty affairs for the COM will be an extension of her role as chair of the CAPT.

“I look forward to the opportunity to combine my work on CAPT with being a committed faculty advocate in helping faculty not only get through promotion and tenure, but in improving the environment in our College of Medicine,” Dr. Hofmann said.

Dr. Hofmann has published extensively on mechanisms that protect the heart from cardiomyopathies associated with ischemia — reperfusion injury and anti-tumor therapy in breast cancer. She has been continually funded by National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association for 17 years and has received more than 15 teaching awards while at UTHSC. Dr. Hofmann was named to the Academy of Distinguished Teaching Professors for the University of Tennessee system and has also provided research training for more than 30 medical and postdoctoral students.

“I have known Polly for a number of years and am extremely pleased with her appointment as associate dean for faculty affairs,” said UTHSC Chancellor Hershel “Pat” Wall, MD. “She has done a remarkable job with the CAPT committee and I look forward to working with Polly in her new capacity.”

Tim Mashburn began his career in academic medicine as the coordinator for admissions at the UTHSC COM, a role which was followed by his appointment as the executive assistant to the dean. He later filled senior administrative positions in the Departments of Pediatrics and Medicine. He currently serves as a vice president for UT Medical Group. Mashburn has held leadership positions in several national professional organizations including the Association of Administrators in Academic Pediatrics, the Administrators of Internal Medicine, and the Medical Group Management Association.

“A number of experienced and distinguished applicants were interviewed for this position; however, Tim emerged as the most knowledgeable and the most qualified candidate,” stated Executive Dean Schwab.

“Joining the leadership team of the College of Medicine provides a tremendous opportunity for me to integrate the knowledge and skills acquired during my tenure at UT and UTMG,” Mashburn commented. “I look forward to working with the faculty, staff and administration, as well as our affiliate organizations, toward the advancement of the college’s mission.”
