Russell W. Chesney, MD, the LeBonheur Professor and chairman of the Pediatrics Department at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), received the Founders Award from the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology.

The award is presented to a senior pediatric nephrologist for meritorious service to the society and to the discipline of pediatric nephrology. Dr. Chesney served the 600-member organization as a council member, secretary/treasurer, and president from 1979 to 1988. He was editor-in-chief of “Pediatric Nephrology,” the journal of both the American and International Societies of Pediatric Nephrology.

“Dr. Chesney has made major contributions to the field of pediatric medicine both professionally and academically. He is nationally recognized in the areas of basic and clinical research, as well as for therapeutic trials in pediatric nephrology, and is highly published with over 300 peer-reviewed publications and 175 book chapters. This recognition by the society is well deserved and reflects positively not only on Dr. Chesney but also on the quality of faculty UT has in Memphis,” said Henry Herrod, MD, dean of the UTHSC College of Medicine.
