Vehicle Safety

|

Dear Campus Community,

Over recent weeks, vehicle burglaries have been on the rise in the Memphis Medical District and city at large. Vehicle burglaries are opportunistic in nature, with thieves targeting vehicles in hopes of stealing firearms. Just this week, two firearms were stolen from vehicles in the Memphis Medical District. Here are a few tips to assist you in keeping your vehicle safe:

  • Make sure to lock all doors and keep windows rolled up.
  • Keep your vehicle tidy! Thieves could believe there is something valuable inside your vehicle when it is only paperwork.
  • Make sure to stow valuables in your trunk before you get to where you are parking your vehicle. Thieves are always watching.
  • If at all possible, do not store firearms in your vehicle.
  • Always report break-ins to UT Health Science Center Campus Police, even if nothing was taken.

UT Health Science Center Campus Police are working with the Memphis Police Department (MPD) and other local law enforcement agencies to combat the rise in vehicle burglaries. At this time there is no known immediate threat to the UT Health Science Center Campus.

We will update the campus should circumstances warrant additional notifications.

The UT Health Science Center Police can be contacted at 901.448.4444. Please store this number in your cell phone’s “speed dial” or contacts. The MPD can be contacted at 901.545.2677 (545.COPS).

We ask all students, faculty, and staff to log in to your UTHSC Alert account to make sure your contact information is updated, as we will be actively sending campus safety messages through this notification system.
