Earlier today, the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees Executive Committee met to discuss several topics in advance of our full board meeting in February. The most exciting news was the approval of Bernie Savarese as the permanent vice president for academic affairs, research and student success. As many of know you, Bernie has been serving in an interim capacity since July 2022 and has done an outstanding job!
Bernie joined the UT System in 2021 with over two decades of experience in higher education, having previously served in leadership roles at both New York University and Ohio State University. He and his team will continue their work with UT campuses, institutes and statewide partners to coordinate and promote high-quality academic and student experiences. These efforts will include a focus on enrollment and student success, access and affordability, career outcomes, faculty development, mental health and wellbeing, and leveraging data to drive improvements systemwide. Additionally, Savarese will oversee research collaboration with UT campuses across the state.
I am also excited to announce that Linda Martin has agreed to stay on as interim chancellor at UT Southern until July 1, 2025. Linda has done a fantastic job at UT Southern, and they are excited to have her continued leadership as we work to grow enrollment and offerings at UT Southern.
Please take a moment to congratulate Bernie and Linda.
