The Experience of Fathering a Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder and the Challenge of Self-Care

This study used a qualitative descriptive narrative design with Story Theory as the theoretical framework and Story Inquiry Method as the methodology to explore the experience of fathering a child with ASD and the challenge of self-care. This study offers a multi-faceted view of the experience of fathering a child with ASD and the challenge of self-care through the identification of themes revealing several new insights.

Mary Lynn Fahey, DNP, MSN, APRN

Associate Clinical Professor, Northeastern University, Bouve College of Health Sciences

Dr. Fahey is a Family Nurse Practitioner with over 25 years of clinical practice experience and currently practices at Massachusetts General Hospital in the Inpatient Arrhythmia Service. She has served as the Program Director of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at Northeastern University, Boston, MA, for over 10 years and is the current Program Director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. Dr. Fahey is the Vice President for the Sigma Theta Tau Chi Epsilon chapter at Endicott College, Beverly, MA.
