Volunteers will work in our Volunteer HUB on different tasks, as needed. Our most common task will be sorting through donated food, checking for package quality, and ensuring the product is “in date”. Poverty Simulation Volunteers Needed!

|

Please consider volunteering for an upcoming Poverty Simulation scheduled for Wednesday, April 12. Poverty Simulations are an educational experience for both volunteers and participants, and they truly take a village to accomplish. Help students learn about the challenges people in poverty face in their daily lives. No experience is required, and multiple roles are needed. Learn more and sign up to volunteer here: https://givepul.se/nvvrjp (Log in with your UTHSC credentials.)

Interested in having your class participate in a poverty simulation? Email Jess Guthrie to learn more about upcoming opportunities!

Join Us For Conversations on Health Disparities

|

Join us on Friday, April 21 at noon for a Conversation on Health Disparities discussing transit accessibility in Memphis. Memphis is a place of extreme class and racial disparities in transportation due to a high poverty rate, sprawled built form and exceptionally low per-capita spending on public transit even for a mid-sized city in the American South. These disparities severely constrain transportation-disadvantaged Memphians in their ability to access health care in both obvious and less-obvious ways. In this edition of Conversations on Health Disparities, Dr. Andrew Guthrie of the University of Memphis’ City and Regional Planning Department will discuss the causes and effects of transportation inequities in Memphis, as well as what can be done about them in terms of both policy and the practice of health care provision. Follow this link to RSVP https://uthsc.campuslabs.com/engage/event/9015929

Dr. Guthrie is an Assistant Professor of City and Regional Planning at the University of Memphis. His research focuses on transportation, housing, advanced geospatial analysis and urban political economy, with special interests in the social equity implications of major public transit projects, zoning reforms and the financialization of housing.
