Understanding the process of collecting data is key to assessing and ensuring quality in qualitative research. Much research has focused on the interview guide, appropriate ways to ask questions, and the interaction between the interviewer and the study participant. Few qualitative researchers have focused on the importance of the interviewer’s listening to ensure the study participant’s engagement and cooperation. This discussion focuses on existing and emerging “good listening” practices in qualitative research, proposed by qualitative researchers and scholars.
