Activity Overview: The Frank M. Norfleet Forum for the Advancement of Health was established at UTHSC in 1979 through a designated fund within the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis.  The mission of the Norfleet Forum is to focus on the improvement of the health status of the citizens who reside in Memphis / Shelby County, the State of Tennessee, the nation, and the world, through concern for effective health policies and organization.  The 2024 Norfleet Forum focuses on promoting safe and stable relationships – the power of positive childhood experiences on resilience against toxic stress for the betterment of our community and improved patient outcomes.

Objectives:

  • Identify the signs of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) and how cumulative toxic stress and the resultant physiologic responses can be long-lasting to the child, family, and others.
  • Define and recognize the types of traumatic events that result in childhood toxic stress and overwhelm a child’s or adolescent’s ability to cope.
  • Describe evidence-based approaches, such as trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapies to address child traumatic stress.

AMA Credit Designation: The University of Tennessee College of Medicine (UTCOM) designates this live activity for a maximum of 5.25 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Continuing Education for Non-Physicians: The UTCOM will issue Certificates of Participation to non-physicians for participating in this activity and designates it for CEUs using the national standard that 1 hour of educational instruction is awarded .1 CEU.

Accreditation: The UTCOM is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
