Two College of Nursing graduates will be honored at the Alumni Awards Banquet on April 21. Jan Young, DNSc (1985), will receive the Outstanding Alumna Award, and Nancy Moss, MSN, (BSN, 1964) will be named Most Supportive Alumna.
Two University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) graduates will be honored at the College of Nursing Alumni Awards Banquet on Friday, April 21 at the Memphis Hilton. Jan Young, DNSc (1985), will receive the Outstanding Alumna Award, and Nancy Smith Moss, MSN, (BSN, 1964) will be named Most Supportive Alumna.
Outstanding Alumna
Dr. Young has had a career of progressive responsibility beginning at St. Joseph Hospital (Memphis), where she was part of the first CARF accredited unit in the Mid- South. After completing her master’s degree, she joined the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Memphis. Her final assignment there was as associate chief of nursing services and extended care. In 1991, Dr. Young returned to St. Joseph Hospital, a 450 bed facility, as director for nursing and later assumed greater responsibilities in the position of senior vice president of operations with leadership accountability for clinical and support services. Working collaboratively with physicians and allied health staff, Dr. Young also established collaborative relationships internally with other hospital departments and externally with the community.
She subsequently worked as a management consultant and maintained a private part-time clinical practice. During these years, she intermittently served as adjunct faculty for both the UT Health Science Center and the University of Memphis. She also taught in the evening program at St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing and for St. Mary’s College satellite campus.
In 1995, Dr. Young became the programs officer for the Assisi Foundation of Memphis, a health conversion foundation, and in 2005, was appointed executive director, the role in which she currently serves.
Dr. Young’s military service began with the U.S. Army Nursing Corps Reserves. She later transferred to the Air National Guard as a primary care nurse practitioner and in 1990 received the national honor of Outstanding Air National Guard Nurse. That year, she also led the team that received the Air National Guard’s first Outstanding Health Promotion Program Award. While serving as chief nurse at the 164th Air Wing, she completed Air War College, and was assigned to state headquarters staff in Tennessee where she served as chief of staff. Currently she holds a national assignment as the Air National Guard Advisor to the assistant surgeon general, USAF Medical Force Development and Nursing Services. For nine years she served as vice president, president, and past president of the Air National Guard Nurse Association. In 2005 she was promoted to the rank of brigadier general.
Dr. Young received her nursing diploma with honors of Outstanding Graduate from the St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis, Tenn. She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from the University of Memphis with honors as Outstanding Graduate, and her master’s degree in nursing from UTHSC College of Nursing in 1985. Focusing on health philanthropy as her dissertation, Dr. Young received her Doctorate of Nursing Science (DNSC) in 2002, as well as the Faculty Award from the UTHSC College of Nursing.
Most Supportive Alumni
For the past five years, Nancy Smith Moss has served as a member of the UTHSC College of Nursing Alumni Board. During that same period she has also been a board member for Better Decisions, a program that teaches decision-making and life-planning skills to inmates at the Tennessee Prison for Women
Her career began as an assistant professor for the Medical College of Georgia, School of Nursing at Athens, where she was a member of the original faculty that developed the BSN program on the campus. Following this assignment, she took the position of assistant professor for the medical surgical graduate program at Vanderbilt University, School of Nursing. In 1980, Ms. Moss became the coordinator of outreach programs in the department of nursing continuing education for the Vanderbilt University Hospital. She later became the coordinator of quality utilization management in 1991 for Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. From 1993 to 2002, she was a case manager for Care Management Consultant’s Inc., Brentwood, Tenn., Kemper National Services, Norcross, Ga., and Integrated Care Management, Atlanta. Since 2002, Ms. Moss has been an independent contractor working as a medical case manager. She is currently a member of the Middle Tennessee Case Managers Association and the Case Management Society of America.
Ms. Moss received her bachelor of science in nursing from the UTHSC College of Nursing in 1964. She went on to receive her master of science in education from University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and her master of science in nursing from the Medical College of Georgia. She has one daughter who graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2004 with a major in Business Administration.
