Anthony Sheyn, MD, associate professor in the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s Department of Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat), has been named the division chief of Pediatric Otolaryngology at UTHSC and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. He replaces Jerome Thompson, MD, MBA, who is stepping back from the division chief role after 16 years.

Dr. Sheyn has been a valued member of UTHSC’s Department of Otolaryngology since he joined the faculty in 2015, both for his research and for work as director of resident research, including organizing monthly resident research conferences.

He is also the chief of otolaryngology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where his work in pediatric thyroid cancer has earned him national and international recognition. He helped establish a multinational team that includes St. Jude, Texas Children’s Hospital, Lurie Children’s Hospital, Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital and Curie Institute in Paris to focus on the causes and treatments for pediatric salivary gland malignancies. He also serves as the liaison to the American Head and Neck Society and the American Academy of Clinical Endocrinology.

“Dr. Sheyn will be excellent in this role. Besides his scholarship, his presence at St. Jude acts as yet another bridge between the two hospitals, both clinically and in research,” said Jon McCullers, MD, senior executive associate dean of UTHSC College of Medicine and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at UTHSC and Le Bonheur.

More than 6,000 children a year are seen in the Le Bonheur and UTHSC ENT Department for treatments that include clearing airways, ear implants, tonsillectomies and repairing cleft lips and palates.

“Dr. Sheyn will be a well-respected member of the leadership team at Le Bonheur and UTHSC,” said Le Bonheur President/CEO Michael Wiggins, DBA, FACHE. “I appreciate the many years of service from Dr. Jerry Thompson and am thrilled Dr. Sheyn is taking on this leadership appointment to continue excellence in this position.”

Dr. Sheyn earned his medical degree at University of Cincinnati and completed a residency in head and neck surgery at Wayne State University and a fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology at Children’s Medical Center at the University of Texas Southwestern.
