Thanks to the generosity of faculty, staff, and students, UTHSC was able to raise $5,000 from the Donuts for Donations event held last week in the GEB and Madison Plaza. All donations will go toward the American Red Cross for Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts.

Houston native Kinsie Arnst, who is working on her PhD in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, is grateful that everyone back home is safe and that UTHSC was able to raise the funds to assist her hometown and knows Houston will rebuild. Arnst’s parents safely evacuated by boat with the help of Arnst’s brother and his friends.

Mary Newell, MS, graduate student program coordinator for the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences said, “We always talk about being a family in Pharmaceutical Sciences. When Harvey was flooding Houston I thought of our student and worried about her family. I knew I had to do something to help. I had to look out for the family.”

In August, the first Category 4 hurricane in the United States since 2004 touched down in Texas. Hurricane Harvey devastated many areas of Texas with 130 mph winds, destroying power lines, trees, and homes. Flooding became the biggest threat for residents of South Texas, particularly Houston, leaving as many as 30,000 people needing shelter.
