On Friday, March 24, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC ) Simulation Program and Department of Graduate Medical Education partnered with the Tennessee Rural Partnership, a non-profit workforce collective, and hosted 40 Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) students from western Tennessee. This was the first symposium held on the UTHSC campus but more joint ventures are anticipated as the multidisciplinary center becomes operational.

While on campus, the students observed various health care professions in action and participated in simulated clinical experiences.

“The simulation program staff was thrilled at the opportunity to showcase UTHSC’s offerings and resources with future Tennessee health care professionals,” said Chad Epps, MD, executive director of Healthcare Simulation and the Center for Patient Safety, which is currently under construction.

According to the state website, HOSA’s two-fold mission is:
1. to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and
2. to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.

The program provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for secondary, post-secondary, adult and collegiate students enrolled in health science education programs. Tennessee Rural Partnership encourages relationships between health care professionals and the community.
