More than 75 middle and high school students are expected to attend a conference Saturday, January 14, sponsored by the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and designed to mentor them by sharpening their social, cultural, and professional skills. The second annual Dream Big conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the UTHSC Student-Alumni Center at 800 Madison Avenue.

The SNMA, the oldest and largest independent, student organization focusing on the concerns of black medical students in the United States, fosters growth and development in the community, especially in underserved areas. Saturday’s interactive sessions will offer fundamental and valuable skills to support positive growth and development for the participants. Topics discussed will include professionalism, goal setting and clinical skills, such as taking blood pressure and using stethoscopes to listen to the heart and lungs. Prior to the event, the organization has been collecting ties on campus to use in etiquette sessions to teach the young men how to properly tie a tie.

The event is free, and breakfast and lunch will be provided. For more information on the program or to find out how to participate, contact the Student National Medical Association at dreambigmemphis@gmail.com.
