Six residents in the Neurology Department in the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center have been invited to present their research at the International Stroke Conference (ISC) in Hawaii February 6-8.  The ISC is the world’s premiere stroke conference.

“It is a remarkable achievement to have six residents from the same program as first-author presenters at the ISC,” said Lewis B. Morgenstern, MD, professor of Neurology, Epidemiology, Emergency Medicine and Neurosurgery at The University of Michigan Medical School and School of Public Health. Dr. Morgenstern is a past chairman of the ISC. “It is a sure sign of the high quality of education and academic excellence of the residency program.”

The UTHSC Neurology residents invited to present at the conference and their topics are:

  • Muhammad F. Ishfaq, MD, “Efficacy and Safety of Oral Anticoagulants in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease: A Systemic Review and Meta-Analysis” and “Safety of Dual Antiplatelet Treatment in Emergent Large Vessel Occlusion (ELVO) patients treated with Mechanical Thrombectomy (MT) and Extracranial Internal Carotid Artery Stenting”
  • Omar Saeed, MD, “Can baseline Glomerular filtration rate predict outcomes in hemorrhagic stroke patients?”
  • Rena D. Sukhdeo, MD, “Racial Disparities in Patient Selection for Drip and Ship Thrombolytic Therapy for Acute Ischemic Stroke”
  • Reza Bavarsad Shahripour, MD, “Does Paradoxical Embolism Impart Different Outcomes after IVT Treatment?” and “Risk prediction for symptomatic Intracranial Hemorrhage (sICH) in Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS) patients treated with Intravenous Thrombolysis (IVT): Does Infarct Matter?”
  • Abhi Pandhi, MD, “Impact of single-pass complete reperfusion on clinical outcomes in Emergent Large Vessel Occlusion (ELVO) Patients treated with Mechanical Thrombectomy (MT)”
  • Savdeep Singh, MD, “Safety and efficacy outcomes of IntravenousThrombolysis (IVT) for in-hospital stroke”

“I have presented my research at this most competitive International Stroke Conference every year since 1993, and in my experience, this year’s success of six residents from a single academic program to present first-authored abstracts is unusual,” said Andrei Alexandrov, MD, Semmes-Murphey Professor and chair of the Department of Neurology at UTHSC.

“We implemented a mentored research program for residents, fellows, and junior faculty in 2014, and under the leadership of Research Professor Georgios Tsivgoulis (MD, PhD), we have steadily increased involvement of our residents in cutting-edge research.”
