The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) announces the second annual Rice Intercollegiate Bowl to be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27 in room 102 of the Humphreys General Education Building on campus.

Three interdisciplinary teams of students from the Colleges of Allied Health, Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Health Science Engineering, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy will compete as they attempt to solve a complex healthcare case. The case is based on a report identifying significant health problems in a fictitious Shelby County neighborhood.

Prior to the competition, teams will be given information and questions about the case in an orientation meeting. They will then present their analyses to a panel of judges, who will provide them with additional information about the case and any questions they may have. Teams will be judged based on their use of interdisciplinary approaches to solving the case, as well as the completeness and clarity of their responses.

Teams will be asked questions about their analyses by the judges, as well as by a panel of community leaders including: Nancy Lawhead, Special Assistant to the Mayor of Shelby County; Yvonne Madlock, Director of the Memphis/Shelby County Health Department; and Ernestine Carpenter, former principal of Weaver High School. Moderator will be Maria Black, health reporter for Fox-13 News.

Goals of the Bowl are to demonstrate the importance of interdisciplinary thinking among health professionals. The competition is named in honor of Bill Rice, UTHSC Interim Chancellor, and is based on a similar program at the University of Texas – Houston.
