On February 9, the Shelby County Relative Caregiver Program (RCP) at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) hosted its annual Hearts of Gold event. A total of 100 caregivers participated in the event, which was held in the UTHSC Student-Alumni Center.

The event is designed to promote positive social interaction and to honor caregivers involved with the Relative Caregiver Program. Those involved continue to show compassion, despite limited resources, and remain committed to the well-being of the children under their care. Children in the program live with and are looked after by caregivers because their biological parents are unable to do so.

The event signified a night for caregivers in the program to enjoy themselves without the children. It was filled with fun, food, dancing, games, giveaways, and lots of laughter in the air. This year’s theme was “Love Is In the Air.” This event could not have been a success without the support and help of our volunteers, advisory board, staff, and university administration,” said Laura Teresa English, MSSW, program administrator for the RCP.

Established in 2001, the RCP offers family services, such as case management, support groups, mentoring, referral services, and limited financial assistance. It is a collaboration between UTHSC and the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services.
