Professor Gabor Tigyi, MD, PhD, Receives Honorary Doctorate from Semmelweis University in Budapest

Gabor J. Tigyi, MD, PhD, professor in the Department of Physiology in the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), has received an honorary doctorate from Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary.

Dr. Tigyi, who was born in Hungary, is the Harriet Van Vleet Endowment Professor in the Department of Physiology and the associate vice chancellor for Research and Industry Relations at UTHSC. He was among six recipients of honorary doctorates given recently by Semmelweis for scientific achievement and professional collaboration with the university. The university has been bestowing the honorary designations annually since 1967.

Dr. Tigyi earned his medical degree at the University Medical School of Pecs in Hungary, and received his PhD in cellular biochemistry from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest. He did postgraduate work at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of California, Irvine. His primary scientific focuses at UTHSC are lysophospholipid mediators and drug discovery research.

Dr. Tigyi has been engaged in a very successful collaboration with the Institute of Clinical Experimental Research at Semmelweis University for more than five years. He has several scientific collaborations with universities around the world.

“It is a humbling honor to be recognized by the premier medical school in Hungary that has produced prominent investigators, including four Nobel Laureates,” Dr. Tigyi said. “This recognition elevates our opportunities to collaborate to a higher level, and I am very excited about these prospects.”
