U.S. News & World Report’s 2013-14 List of Best Children’s Hospitals Includes Le Bonheur

Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital was named this week to U.S. News & World Report’s 2013-14 Best Children’s Hospitals. The hospital made the list for the third consecutive year and was named in five areas:neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology, cardiology and heart surgery, nephrology and urology.

“This recognition reassures our patients and their families that they are in a children’s hospital that is among the best in the nation. It also demonstrates that our commitment to quality, research and the special field of pediatric medicine continues, endures and progresses,” said President and CEO Meri Armour. “Our employees’ and physicians’ daily contributions to caring and advocating for children are what upholds our reputation and serves as our hallmark – that every child truly does matter to us.”

More than 80 percent of the physicians who practice at Le Bonheur have close affiliations with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). Most Le Bonheur physicians also serve as faculty who teach in UTHSC classrooms, as clinical care instructors who guide and supervise medical students, residents and fellows in the hospital, and as researchers who propel science forward through grants and sponsored projects funding. UTHSC and Le Bonheur also jointly operate UT Le Bonheur Pediatric Specialists, the Mid-South’s only multi-specialty pediatric practice solely focused on children’s health care.

The U.S. News list names the top children’s hospitals in each of 10 pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology. In the 2013-14 rankings, 87 of the 179 surveyed hospitals ranked in at least one specialty.

For families of sick children, Best Children’s Hospitals provides unparalleled quality-related information, including survival rates, adequacy of nurse staffing, procedure volume and much more. The full rankings and methodology are available at www.usnews.com/childrenshospitals. The rankings will also be published in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2014 guidebook, which will be available in August.
