Ken Brown, JD, MPA, PhD, FACHE, executive vice chancellor and chief operations officer of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), was invited by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) to serve as a leader of a recent webinar on campus planning.

Dr. Brown’s presentation used UTHSC’s Campus Master Plan, unveiled last fall, as a framework to discuss the use of data in master planning. The first comprehensive blueprint for growth in more than two decades, the plan is designed to enhance UTHSC’s stature as an urban academic medical center and secure its spot as the nucleus of the Medical Center District in Memphis. It includes 15 new buildings, improved pedestrian access, better traffic flow, and renovations to 10 buildings.

Dr. Brown was accompanied by Krisan Osterby, campus planning director for Perkins+Will, the architecture and design firm that drafted the plan after more than a year of discussions with faculty, staff, students and community stakeholders.

The webinar also highlighted the master planning process of Stanford School of Medicine. Joslyn Gray, senior facilities planner, and Niraj Dangoria, associate dean for facilities planning and management, joined in leading the discussion. The focus was on the planning processes of these two institutions and looked at outcomes, tools and techniques for using space wisely for current and future needs.

Nearly 200 people from institutions across the country including Indiana University School of Medicine, UT Southwestern Medical Center, Tufts University, Tulane School of Medicine, Vanderbilt University, Duke University School of Medicine, Yale Medical Group, and University of Virginia School of Medicine, registered for the webinar.

Dr. Brown initially described the master planning process in a speech about taking UTHSC from an “incidental campus to an intentional campus” during the spring meeting of the AAMC’s Group on Business Affairs/Group on Institutional Planning in New York. The webinar was designed to engage a wider audience and allow for questions to the speakers.
