In humans, large arteries lose elasticity and thicken with age and other pathological conditions, leading to conditions that cause high blood pressure. Age-related arterial stiffening affects a large population and is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, yet it remains poorly understood. There is no effective intervention. Work being done in the lab of Dr. Zhongjie Sun, professor and chair of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s Department of Physiology, is focused on discovering the underlying causes of the condition.
