UTHSC researcher gets $3 million to study loss of muscle in aging process

|

Dr. Qi Zhao is a data epidemiologist. Her lab is her small office in the University of Tennessee Health Science Center doctors’ office building on North Pauline, where these days she’s crunching realms of data on the grip strength of people in their 60s and the speed of their gait, and then cross-referencing it with body mass numbers and molecular-level studies of their plasma. What’s she hoping to find is a connection between low-weight molecules, like amino acids and lipids, and the incapacitating condition of sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass that causes frailty – even mortality – later in life.
