UTHSC College of Medicine African-American alumni reunion to celebrate trailblazers

|

Segregation led to isolation for Alvin Crawford while attending the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in the early 1960s. Crawford couldn’t attend class parties and had difficulty finding other students at the Memphis school willing to study with him in the era of Jim Crow. But that didn’t stop him from becoming the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine’s first African-American graduate in 1964. Crawford and other African-American graduates of the College of Medicine will be celebrated for their contributions to the college and the field of medicine at its inaugural alumni reunion, which begins Friday.
