Animalu, who’s also an associate professor of infectious diseases at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, said she declined a speaking engagement at a suburban high school after she was told she could not mention the use of contraceptives while discussing HIV. “I spent 15 years training to become an infectious disease and HIV specialist,” she said. “So, I declined. I refused to do that talk because I could not do it in good conscience. Obviously, abstinence is not working, so we have to move away from that.”
