Obesity tied to lower stroke, mortality rates during AF hospitalizations

Patients with obesity who were hospitalized for atrial fibrillation had a lower risk for stroke and in-hospital mortality compared with those without obesity, according to a study published in The American Journal of Cardiology. “To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first to report the paradoxical protective effect of obesity on in-hospital outcomes in AF hospitalizations at a large, nationwide level,” Manyoo Agarwal, MD, chief resident of internal medicine at University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in Memphis, and colleagues wrote.
