Federal Government Asks to Intervene in Case Against Methodist

|

The U.S. government has requested to intervene in a lawsuit alleging that Methodist University Hospital executives created a scheme to entice more than $1.5 billion in business from West Cancer Center by rewarding physicians with kickbacks.vcv

A former CEO of Methodist University Hospital, Jeffrey Liebman, filed the lawsuit in 2017. The former dean of the School of Medicine at University of Tennessee Health Science, David Stern, joined the lawsuit in December 2019 claiming to have additional details about the alleged scheme outlined in the former executives’ third amended complaint.

“We welcome the motion to intervene filed today by the United States. The Department of Justice conducted a thorough investigation, and the government’s action to intervene vindicates Mr. Liebman and Dr. Stern, the strength of their claims and their integrity and courage,” said Bryan Vroon, lead counsel for Liebman and Stern. “This is a major development and commitment by the Department of Justice to lead the prosecution of this case.”
