The idea is to compare a mix of benefits like health coaching, diabetes education material and motivational text messages to see what impact those have on helping patients better self-manage their condition.

For this research study – called the MODEL (Management of Diabetes in Everyday Life) program – about 1,000 African-American men and women over age 18 who have diabetes with high blood-sugar levels are being recruited. The study is being led by Dr. James Bailey, professor of internal medicine and preventive medicine and director of the Center for Health System Improvement at UTHSC.
