Under the direction of Committee Chair Robert Waller, MD, the search committee for the position of Vice President for Health Affairs and UTHSC Chancellor selected four candidates to recommend to UT President John Petersen for his consideration.

Today, under the direction of Committee Chair Robert Waller, MD (president emeritus of the Mayo Foundation and UTHSC alumnus), the search committee for the position of Vice President for Health Affairs and Chancellor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center selected four candidates to recommend to University of Tennessee President John Petersen for his consideration.

These individuals include: Deborah German, MD, former president and CEO of Saint Thomas Hospital, Nashville, Tenn.; Antonia Novello, MD, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Health, New York, N.Y.; William F. Owen, Jr., MD, chief scientist of Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Renal division, Deerfield, Ill.; and David M. Stern, MD, dean of the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, Augusta, Ga.

This decision comes after two weeks of campus visits by the seven semi-finalist candidates. During these visits, they met with groups of students, faculty, staff, alumni and community leaders, as well as conducted open forums.

Dr. Waller commented, “The search committee’s goal was to have a list of finalists to President Petersen as early as possible in 2005. We are pleased with the way this search has gone thus far. To narrow the list of applicants to four was quite difficult, because all applicants are impressive and highly qualified.”
