Marion Dugdale, MD, professor of Hematology, and Gabor Tigyi, MD, PhD, professor of Physiology, will be featured at the 7th Annual Dean’s Symposium, which will be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 4 at the Central Library.
Marion Dugdale, MD, professor of Hematology, and Gabor Tigyi, MD, PhD, professor of Physiology, will be featured at the 7th Annual Dean’s Symposium, which is organized by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s (UTHSC) College of Medicine. The public is invited to attend the event, which will be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 4 at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar Avenue, meeting room C.
Dr. Dugdale will discuss “My 50 Years with Hemophilia: From the Dark Ages to the Possibility of Gene Therapy.” Dr. Tigyi will present on “Lipids That Heal.”
Dr. Dugdale received her undergraduate degree from Bryn Mawr College, magna cum laude, and her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. After completing her internal medicine residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, she entered a fellowship in hematology at Duke University. Continuing her studies in hematology and coagulation at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Dugdale accepted a faculty position in 1962. Devoting her entire career to the care of patients with blood disorders, she has been the director of the Hemophilia Clinic at UTHSC since 1972.
Dr. Tigyi is the Harriet Van Vleet Professor and chair of the Department of Physiology in the UTHSC College of Medicine. Before joining UTHSC in 1992, he received his MD and PhD degrees in his native Hungary. His postgraduate training was completed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Uppsala in Sweden, the Max-Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, in Goettingen, Germany, and at the Department of Psychobiology, University of California, Irvine.
In addition to his UTHSC faculty position, Dr. Tigyi also is an adjunct professor of chemistry at the University of Memphis, and an adjunct professor of graduate studies, Hokkaido University, Japan. He is a foreign member of the Hungarian National Academy of Science and the European Academy for Arts, Letters and Sciences. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, Dr. Tigyi is a sought-after research mentor and speaker, nationally and internationally. He is widely published and has several patents to his name.
A founder and chief scientific officer of RxBio Inc., an emerging biotechnology company, Dr. Tigyi’s current research focuses on growth factor-like phospholipids. These phospholipid mediators regulate a host of important cellular responses that range from the therapeutic resistance and spreading of cancer to the initiation of atherosclerotic disease.
