Dr. Jim Dale, professor of medicine and chief of infectious disease at the UT Health Science Center, has been named a Fellow of the Association of American Physicians (AAP). Only 40 new members are elected each year and are chosen based on life-long achievements in medical research and academic leadership.

Dr. Dale also serves as associate chief of staff for education at the VA Medical Center.

“I am very pleased and honored to have been inducted into the AAP,” he said. “The organization has a rich history, dating back 116 years, of recognizing the achievements of physician-scientists and providing a forum for exchange of ideas and medical research findings. My election to the AAP also reflects very positively on the University of Tennessee and the VA Medical Center, which continue to provide an environment that encourages and supports research by physician-scientists.”

Dr. Dale is a 1977 graduate of the UT College of Medicine and joined the faculty in 1983. He has made enormous strides in the area of strep throat and is wrapping up his Phase I clinical trials of StreptAvax, a vaccine for the prevention of infections caused by group A streptococcus.
