11 Master’s-Level Nursing Students to Receive $10,000 Scholarships

Patricia A. Cowan, PhD, associate professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), has received a grant totaling $110,000 from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The award, which falls under the foundation’s New Careers in Nursing initiative, will provide eleven $10,000 scholarships for students training in UTHSC’s Master of Science in Nursing Clinical Nurse Leader Program. Each student will receive scholarship funds for three semesters, fall 2012, spring 2013, and summer 2013. This year’s grant marks the fifth consecutive year of funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The foundation has contributed $610,000 to the UTHSC College of Nursing, providing scholarships for a total of 61 students.

The New Careers in Nursing Program provides scholarships, mentorship and leadership training to students from underrepresented groups. Additionally, UTHSC provides academic and social support to nursing students. UTHSC award recipients of the award have a 100 percent graduation rate and 98 percent first-time pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
