UTHSC announces the third annual Rice Intercollegiate Bowl to be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25 in room 102 of the Humphreys General Education Building on campus.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) announces the third annual Rice Intercollegiate Bowl to be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25 in room 102 of the Humphreys General Education Building on campus.

Three interdisciplinary teams of students from the Colleges of Allied Health, Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Health Science Engineering, Medicine, and Nursing will compete as they attempt to solve a complex healthcare case. The case is based on the problem of adolescent obesity.

Prior to the competition, teams will be given information and questions about the case in an orientation meeting. They will then present their analyses to a panel of judges, who will provide them with additional information about the case and any questions they may have. Teams will be judged based on their use of interdisciplinary approaches to solving the case, as well as the completeness and clarity of their responses.

Goals of the bowl are to demonstrate the importance of interdisciplinary thinking among health professionals. The competition is named in honor of Bill Rice, UTHSC interim chancellor, and is based on a similar program at the University of Texas – Houston.

A team of five students will be chosen from these teams to participate in a national competition in April. That event, called Clarion and hosted by the University of Minnesota, will include students from selected academic health science centers and will focus on the analysis of a case related to medical errors and patient safety.
