“The Interleukin-1 Signaling in Endothelial Cell Plasticity and Atherosclerosis Progression”
Disturbed flow at atheroprone regions primes atherosclerotic plaque inflammation by enhancing endothelial activation. The interleukin-1 (IL-1) signaling has been extensively investigated, and while the Canakinumab Anti-Inflammatory Thrombosis Outcomes Study (CANTOS) established the role of treating IL-1 induced-inflammation in atherosclerosis, our understanding of endothelial cell plasticity at the atherosclerosis-prone sites remains limited. In this seminar I will (1) present the functional roles of the adaptor protein NCK1 in endothelial activation and as a key regulator to the interleukin-1 receptor activated kinase-1 (IRAK1), and (2) define the molecular signaling effects of IRAK1 in endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Importantly, the presentation includes overt discussion of various ways students and faculty have collaborated on my research. The presentation concludes with current and future research aspects to selectively limit the IL-1 signaling within the endothelium in atherosclerosis.
Please send an email to Dedra Jeffries (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you are interested in the seminar.
