Today is a day devoted around the world to the topic of inclusion. Did you know in 2010 President Obama signed Rosa’s Law changing the word “retarded” in medical and legal documentation to “intellectual disability?” This was the beginning of the movement toward inclusive language which has grown in to a movement toward meaningful inclusion. Last year 200 UTHSC students signed the Student Occupational Therapy Association’s pledge to make the their language, this campus, and/or the world a more inclusive and welcoming place for people with intellectual disabilities. This year, we are asking you to sign the pledge at http://www.r-word.org/ and to make a personal pledge to be more inclusive in 2021.
