Prediabetes, the conventional term for the intermediate stage between diabetes and normal glucose regulation, currently affects nearly 100 million adults in the U.S. Like diabetes, prediabetes is associated with increased risks of complications in the eyes, kidneys, nerves and cardiovascular system. Based on the natural history of type 2 diabetes, intervention at the stage of prediabetes can interrupt development of the full blown disease. Focusing on prediabetes, thus, is compelling. However, a deeper understanding of the pathobiology of prediabetes is critical to the discovery and delivery of programs for preventing diabetes. Over the past nearly 20 years, our group has been studying the predictive risk factors and triggers for the initial escape from normal glucose regulation toward prediabetes.
This seminar will discuss the demographic, anthropometric, biobehavioral, biochemical, metabolomic and molecular factors that drive the transition from normal glucose regulation to prediabetes. Finally, intervention for prevention of diabetes and reversal of prediabetes will be discussed.
All attendees, please sign the sign-in sheet before entering the auditorium.
